Mental health looks different to everyone. Many people feel like they are not normal, they experience a gap or disparity between themselves and how they think they should be feeling or experiencing life. They see that gap but try to hold on and the string represents that grasp between their mental state and normalcy. The vagina shape that these evoke touches on the idea of women and hysteria. In the early 20th century, hysteria would be diagnosed to women who had struggles with their mental health, and a hysterectomy would be preformed to "cure" it. Thus enforcing the idea of women being biologically unstable and "crazy."
